Question:
I'd like to know weather or not you can prescribe BHT in cream form and also can BHT cure this condition called Polycitis Ovaries Syndrome suspected by my GP or do I need another kind of treatment?
Answer:
Polycystic ovaries can be caused by low progesterone, or even by low thyroid function. Ask you GP to check your thyroid function (TSH, free T4, free T3), fasting insulin, lipids, LH/FSH and ask him also to check progesterone/estrogen, testosterone – levels which all can cause ovary problems. Female hormones should be checked at certain days during the menstrual cycle, and the best way to check hormones is a saliva test. So it now really depends what is causing your polycystic ovaries, the cause should be found first, your hormone levels tested properly and also those other tests done as mentioned earlier. Then when we know what is causing the problem, we can start treating. In progesterone treatment I would warmly recommend ONLY bio-identical progesterone because it has similar chemical structure and function in the body that our own progesterone. Synthetic progesterone (progestin) is very well known to increase risk for heart disease and breast cancer.
Question:
I’m 55 y old lady. Is there an alternative which I may now use as I have reduced memory, chronic lack of sleep, loss of libido and breast fibroids?
Answer:
I would warmly recommend that your hormone levels will be tested and corrected. Low DHEA and testosterone can cause loss of lipido. Low progesterone can cause poor sleep and also fibroids in breasts. Melatonin effects on sleep. Estrogen and pregnenolone, stress all that effect on memory. Estrogen is very important for memory in women same than testosterone for men. Then of course your diet is important to be checked to make sure that you get all nutrients, vitamins and minerals. But at the age of 55 you will need also your hormones balanced, because to correct only nutrients will not be enough.
Question:
I read somewhere that also men can have high levels of female hormones. Is that true. And Why?
Answer:
Yes, it is true. Aging men often have elevated estrogens in the blood. One reason for that is that older men tend to have more body fat than young men. Fat tissue is rich in aromatase that converts testosterone (male hormone) to estrogen (female hormone). Other reasons can be overuse of alcohol, zinc deficiency and even environmental estrogens can increase estrogen levels in men. If the female hormone levels stay high for long time – the man starts getting “old man” problems: breast development, body hair loses, enlarged prostate and difficulties to urinate, impotence. Many men benefit of testosterone treatment.
